Steam Bentwood Chairs by Dohoon Kim
Firstly the technique called ‘bending wood’ is pretty well known for and has been used in great examples such as Thonet’s first steam-bent beech cafe chair and Alvar Aalto’s laminated berch stool. These examples have become essential works in modern design history. While there are many more versions of this technique developed for various purposes, I’m working on designing and making objects based on ‘Steam bent-wood’ and ‘laminated bent-wood’ skills. Among the rest, the ‘Steam bentwood chair’ that is one of my latest works shows its organically structured form made with steam bent-wood technique.
Steam bentwood chair is designed and manufactured by steaming wood processing technique which bends the wood in steaming condition. This technique gives possibilities of environmentally sustainable design with using thin and small amount of wood and also some advantages such as free expression of formation, big elasticity, high durability and small deformation of wood so on.
When you look at it in detail you can see each curve twists a bit in order to connect to each other and the bent backrest has the same width as the legs to create a unity of structure. Eventually this structural combination creates different expressions per viewing angle. As a result of the bentwood chair being made in this way it’s very light and strong at the same time.
